All psychologists in Australia hold general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia, meeting national standards for education, training, supervised practice, ethical conduct and ongoing professional development.
General psychologist
To become a registered psychologist, an applicant must complete a minimum of four years of accredited study, plus either:
One year of accredited postgraduate study and one year of supervised clinical practice, or
Two years of supervised clinical practice.
Clinical psychologist
A clinical psychologist meets all of the above requirements and has completed an additional two years of postgraduate clinical training, such as a Master of Clinical Psychology.
What to expect from both
All psychologists, whether general or clinical, undertake ongoing education in evidence-based psychological approaches to assessment and treatment across a wide range of concerns and populations. Regardless of which type of psychologist you see, you can expect the same standard of ethical practice and quality of care.
