What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

Learn what a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP/MHCP) is, how it works, and how it can help you access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions with eligible AHPRA-registered psychologists.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), sometimes referred to as a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), is a plan prepared by a GP to help you access mental health support from eligible healthcare professionals, including AHPRA-registered psychologists.

If your GP believes you would benefit from psychological support, they may create a Mental Health Treatment Plan and provide a referral to a psychologist.

What are the benefits of a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan may make you eligible for Medicare rebates on psychology sessions with eligible AHPRA-registered psychologists.

With a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, you may be able to access Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions each calendar year, helping to reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Once you have attended your appointment, you can submit a claim for your Medicare rebate if you are eligible. Learn more: How do I claim my Medicare rebate?
